Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive, medication-free, US FDA-approved brain stimulation technique that treats resistant depression, OCD, smoking addiction & more. It uses targeted magnetic pulses to either stimulate or inhibit specific parts of the brain.
rTMS is a simple outpatient procedure. During each session, a clinician positions a magnetic coil near your scalp to deliver focused pulses to the brain. The treatment takes about 30 minutes, requires no anesthesia, and you can return to your daily activities immediately afterward.
Yes, rTMS has been proven effective, especially for individuals who haven’t responded well to medication or therapy alone. It has a 2.8x better response rate for Depression, 4.5x better response rate for OCD, and a 2.9x higher quit-rate for smokers.
A typical course of rTMS involves daily sessions over 1-4 weeks, followed by a personalized maintenance schedule. The number and frequency of sessions may vary depending on your condition and response to treatment.
You’ll meet both a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist who will work together to fully understand your symptoms, history, and treatment goals — especially if previous treatments haven’t worked well for you.
We use structured clinical assessments to confirm your diagnosis and determine whether rTMS is the right treatment for you. Not everyone needs rTMS. This step ensures your treatment is safe, targeted, and evidence-based.
If rTMS is recommended, we’ll build a tailored plan around it, often combining it with therapy and lifestyle guidance to improve your results. You’ll know exactly what to expect, how many sessions are needed, and how we’ll track your progress.
Our care doesn’t stop when your treatment stops. You’ll get ongoing follow-ups, symptom tracking, and expert support even after your treatment has stopped to help you sustain your improvement.

When you visit BetterPlace for the first time, you will speak to our in-house clinical psychologists and psychiatrists, who will take a detailed case history and understand your chief complaints. The psychologist will then discuss your case with our psychiatrist, who will share a diagnosis and recommend the appropriate assessments and treatment plans.
Our preferred approach is for you to meet both because each treatment plan is a combination of psychotherapy and psychiatric services. Our goal is to have you recover faster, and stay well. However, you can meet just one of them too, if you wish to do so.
No, in the first session, we will thoroughly understand your case and symptoms. From there our psychiatrists will diagnose you using the latest diagnostic tools, they will coordinate with the in-house psychologists to discuss a treatment plan, and only then your treatment will start.
rTMS is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain linked to mood regulation. It helps improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions by gently rebalancing brain activity.
rTMS is most commonly used for treatment-resistant depression, but it’s also effective for anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, and chronic pain. We’ll assess your specific needs to see if rTMS is a suitable option for you.
Yes, rTMS is considered very safe. It’s approved by regulatory bodies like the FDA and NICE. Side effects are usually mild, such as slight scalp discomfort or a temporary headache after treatment.
A typical rTMS session lasts about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your individual treatment plan. There’s no downtime, so you can return to your day straight after.
You might feel a tapping or tingling sensation on your scalp during the session, but it’s generally well tolerated. We’ll check in with you regularly to ensure your comfort.
rTMS is more effective for people who have not responded well to medication. It works differently from medication and doesn’t have the same systemic side effects.
You will find out after you receive your diagnosis. Our psychologists and psychiatrists will collaboratively create a treatment plan customised for you – and only depending on what you truly need, will your team of professionals be put together. This allows us to personalise each person’s care. However, one thing that remains common is that all cases are overseen by our Clinical Governance team – senior Psychiatrist Dr Sunil Mittal, and senior Psychologist Mitali Srivastava.
The BetterPlace clinic is open from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and 9:00 am – 7:00 pm on Tuesday, Friday
BetterPlace is located within a hospital because it allows us to work closely with specialist doctors from other fields, such as Cardiologists (heart doctors) and Dermatologists (skin doctors), whose patients can greatly benefit from mental health support. This is because there is a scientifically proven connection between mental health and various physical ailments – from Heart Attacks to Psoriasis to IBS and more.
There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment in mental health – each person needs a unique treatment plan, so the recovery period can also differ. However, most patients start seeing significant improvement in their day-to-day functioning and quality of life within 2-3 weeks of treatment. In fact, for certain advanced psychiatric treatments like accelerated rTMS (for Depression, OCD and Addictions), patients can start seeing results in a few days.
The total cost for a treatment is based on your condition and a tentative timeline of your treatment journey, that we will share during your first clinic visit.
Our cost per session is INR 2,000 and treatment frequency on average is 1 session per week.
Our psychiatrists and psychologists provide both online and offline consultancy. However, some specialised therapy techniques like relaxation therapy, rTMS or tDCS can only be administered in person, at our clinic.
