See How Brain Stimulation Works at BetterPlace

1. What is Brain Stimulation?

It is an advanced treatment approach that uses gentle magnetic or electrical waves to help improve your mood, especially when traditional options like medication or talk therapy have not shown any significant results.

Does it Actually Work?

Yes! These treatments are highly effective for managing depression and other mental health conditions, offering a great alternative when you need a different path to feeling better.

Is it Safe?

Absolutely. Leading therapies in this category are FDA-approved and very safe. They are trusted by top medical institutions and are designed to be comfortable and well-tolerated.

How is it administered?

During a typical session, you will simply sit back and relax. Specialized equipment sends mild pulses to the parts of your brain that regulate mood. Watch the video above to see how it works in action.

Brain Stimulation Treatments Offered at BetterPlace

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)

Think of rTMS as a gentle, targeted approach to boosting your mood. It is a completely non-invasive treatment designed to help lift symptoms of depression, especially when other methods have not quite given you the relief you need.

It works by sending focused, repetitive magnetic pulses to the specific areas of your brain that regulate how you feel, waking up cells that might be underactive. During a session, you will sit back in a comfortable chair while a clinician simply rests a small magnetic coil against your head. You stay awake, alert, and relaxed the entire time.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)

tDCS is another non-invasive brain stimulation option that uses very mild, gentle electrical currents to stimulate your brain.

It works by sending a steady, low-intensity current to specific areas, which encourages your brain cells to communicate more effectively and helps improve your overall well-being.

When you receive this treatment, a specialist will place small, comfortable pads called electrodes directly on your scalp. It is entirely painless, meaning you can simply rest while the device quietly does its work.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

ECT is a highly effective, specialised medical treatment generally used when you are navigating severe depression or bipolar disorder and need more immediate relief.

It works by delivering a brief, carefully controlled electrical stimulation to your brain. This gentle stimulation causes a mild, controlled seizure that helps “reset” your brain chemistry and significantly improve your symptoms.

To ensure you feel completely safe and secure, you will receive this treatment in a clinical setting under mild general anaesthesia. You will be completely asleep and unaware while a dedicated medical team administers the treatment and closely monitors your care.

Transformation Stories at BetterPlace!

“My brother has had depression for over 4 years without any results. At BetterPlace I found out about rTMS which can help if other treatments don’t work and that has been like a miracle. Obviously i was scared initially because there was a machine but it literally was so gentle and relaxing. Dr Akul has made my brother feel like himself again and he’s finally active and lively nowadays.”

Frequently Asked Questions

When you visit BetterPlace for the first time, you will speak to our in-house clinical psychologists and psychiatrists, who will take a detailed case history and understand your chief complaints. The psychologist will then discuss your case with our psychiatrist, who will share a diagnosis and recommend the appropriate assessments and treatment plans.

Our preferred approach is for you to meet both because each treatment plan is a combination of psychotherapy and psychiatric services. Our goal is to have you recover faster, and stay well. However, you can meet just one of them too, if you wish to do so.

rTMS is most commonly used for treatment-resistant depression, but it’s also effective for anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, and chronic pain. We’ll assess your specific needs to see if rTMS is a suitable option for you.

Yes, rTMS is considered very safe. It’s approved by regulatory bodies like the FDA and NICE. Side effects are usually mild, such as slight scalp discomfort or a temporary headache after treatment.

rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) is generally safe, but it can cause mild, temporary side effects. The most common issues are mild scalp discomfort, tingling, or localised pain at the stimulation site during the session. Some people also experience brief, mild tension headaches or lightheadedness immediately after treatment. In extremely rare cases (roughly 1 in 10,000), it can cause seizures.

A typical rTMS session lasts about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your individual treatment plan. There’s no downtime, so you can return to your day straight after.

You might feel a tapping or tingling sensation on your scalp during the session, but it’s generally well tolerated. We’ll check in with you regularly to ensure your comfort.

rTMS is more effective for people who have not responded well to medication. It works differently from medication and doesn’t have the same systemic side effects.

The BetterPlace clinic is open from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and 9:00 am – 7:00 pm on Tuesday, Friday
